TCM Consultation PULSE DIAGNOSIS

How Can TCM Understand Your Health Through Pulse Diagnosis? by Ban Hock Tong TCM @ Skudai Baru

Many people who visit a TCM clinic for the first time often wonder:
Can a doctor really understand your health just by feeling your wrist?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this is called pulse diagnosis, which is one of the four diagnostic methods in TCM: inspection, listening & smelling, inquiry, and pulse-taking. By gently feeling the pulse at the wrist, the physician observes the speed, strength, depth, and rhythm of the pulse to understand the flow of Qi and blood and the functional state of the internal organs.

Different pulse qualities may reflect different body conditions. For example:
• A weak pulse may be related to Qi and blood deficiency
• A slippery pulse may indicate dampness or phlegm accumulation
• A wiry pulse may be associated with stress or liver Qi stagnation

Of course, TCM physicians do not rely on pulse diagnosis alone.
They usually combine it with symptom inquiry, tongue observation, and overall body constitution assessment to form a more complete understanding of your health. Based on this, they may recommend suitable treatments such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, or therapeutic massage (Tuina).
